Arsenic and respiratory cancer in man: an occupational study.

چکیده
To clarify the role of arsenic in human carcinogenesis, the mortality experience of 8,047 white male smelter workers exposed to arsenic trioxide during 1938-63 was studied and compared with that of the white male population of the same States. Smelter workers had an excess total mortality, due mainly to malignant neoplasms of the respiratory system and diseases of the heart. The threefold increase in respiratory cancer was analyzed in relation to the length of employment and degree of exposure to arsenic, sulfur dioxide, and other elements in the smelter. The excess of respiratory cancer was as high as eightfold among employees who worked more than 15 years and who were heavily exposed to arsenicj it showed a gradient in proportion to the degree of exposure to arsenic and sulfur dioxide. The findings support the hypothesis that inhaled arsenic is a respiratory carcinogen in man, but an inRuence of sulfur dioxide or unidentified chemicals, varying concomitantly with arsenic exposure, cannot be discounted.-J Nat Cancer Inst 42: 1045-1052,1969.

High-Resolution Computed Tomography and Pulmonary Function Findings of Occupational Arsenic Exposure in Workers
BACKGROUND The number of studies where non-malignant pulmonary diseases are evaluated after occupational arsenic exposure is very few. AIMS To investigate the effects of occupational arsenic exposure on the lung by high-resolution computed tomography and pulmonary function tests. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cross-sectional study. METHODS In this study, 256 workers with suspected respirator...
متن کاملCancers related to exposure to arsenic at a copper smelter.
OBJECTIVE This is an update of an earlier study on the relation between exposure to arsenic in air and deaths from respiratory cancer. The purpose was to verify earlier findings of a supralinear dose response relation and to examine relations with other cancers, particularly those reported in studies on drinking water. METHODS An earlier study of 2802 men who worked at a copper smelter for a ...
متن کاملLung cancer mortality in arsenic-exposed workers from a cadmium recovery plant.
BACKGROUND There is evidence that arsenic is a late-stage human lung carcinogen. AIMS To investigate lung cancer risks in a cohort of cadmium recovery workers in relation to period from ceasing exposure to arsenic. METHODS The mortality experience (1940-2001) of a cohort of 625 male workers from a US cadmium recovery plant was compared with expectations based on US national mortality rates....
متن کاملControlling the healthy worker survivor effect: an example of arsenic exposure and respiratory cancer.
OBJECTIVE This investigation sought to examine whether methods proposed to control the healthy worker survivor effect would influence the shape or magnitude of the dose-response curve for respiratory cancer induced by arsenic. METHODS Results from an unadjusted analysis are compared with results obtained by applying four different methods for control of the healthy worker survivor effect to d...
متن کاملInvestigation of occupational and environmental causes of respiratory cancers (ICARE): a multicenter, population-based case-control study in France
BACKGROUND Occupational causes of respiratory cancers need to be further investigated: the role of occupational exposures in the aetiology of head and neck cancers remains largely unknown, and there are still substantial uncertainties for a number of suspected lung carcinogens. The main objective of the study is to examine occupational risk factors for lung and head and neck cancers. METHODS/...
